The objective of the Cape Town project is to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” as outlined by the SDG4 Quality Education. The focus is upskilling and empowering local project partner staff and members of the local community including children and with a focus on education for women.

Our work within the communities is helping to increase knowledge of health-related topics and promote the importance of wellbeing. We have delivered a series of First Aid courses to 90 community members. We addressed other health issues.   In 2019 ten WASH workshops were held with children between the ages of 5 to 13, 349  children aged 5-7 attended oral health workshops in 2019, and 67 children participated in a week-long oral health holiday program.

Girls empowerment plays a key part in breaking the cycle of gender inequality. Over the past year, a total of 143 girls between the ages of 11 and 13 participated in workshops focused on physical and mental health development. We also implemented a menstrual health initiative, with our partners ACJ Phakade school which was attended by 60 female students.

Computer skills have been identified as a key need in the community.  In 2019, 1240 computer lessons were delivered with local women being the main attendees. Another focus is on English lessons.  Once a student enters grade 4, their class instruction and assessment are in English rather than their home language. This poses a great challenge for students, the majority with Xhosa as their first language. In 2019, 473 one to one tutoring sessions supported the transition to English instruction.
